About TSI

The Trade Secrets Institute (TSI) at Brooklyn Law School is designed to provide comprehensive, neutral coverage of key trade secret cases and legislative initiatives throughout the United States. It has established a database—the first of its kind in the nation—that connects users to supporting documents, briefs, motions, and timelines for current cases, as well as recent updates on pending legislation and regulations concerning trade secrets. Users can search the site by trade secrets issue, trade secret subject matter, document type, or jurisdiction. The content of the site is compiled by student TSI Fellows under the guidance of intellectual property law professionals.

Building on BLS’s strong intellectual property curriculum, which blends traditional copyright, patent, and trademark law with a thorough understanding of information science, Internet privacy, and media and telecommunications law, the TSI is a unique opportunity for law students to engage with trade secrets subject matter in real time, while also encouraging the dissemination of information for the good of the public at large. Each year, th ree students are selected as TSI F ellows and are tasked with maintaining the TSI database and organizing the annual TSI symposium, which hosts panels of top-notch trade secrets scholars and practitioners. A cornerstone of the TSI is a the Trade Secrets course, taught by Adjunct Professor of Law Steven Kayman, a partner at Proskauer Rose and founder and co-head of its Non-Compete and Trade Secrets group.

Made possible by a generous grant from the Mai Foundation, a private philanthropic organization, the TSI was spearheaded by Brooklyn Law School alumni, David Mitnick ’00, the founder and president of DomainSkate LLC, Adjunct Professor of Law Alexander Kaplan ’00, a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP, and The Honorable Claire Kelly ’93, an expert in international trade law. Professor Kelly is now a Judge on the United States Court of International Trade. Professor Christopher Beauchamp, an expert in the areas of intellectual property and legal history, is the TSI’s newest faculty leader. The TSI also benefits from input of its Advisory Board, each with expertise in intellectual property and trade secrets.
